Choosing a First Dance Song You Won't Second-Guess
The most common first-dance regret isn't picking a 'bad' song — it's picking a song because it felt like the expected choice rather than an honest one. If you can't name why a song means something to the two of you specifically, it's worth pausing before you lock it in.
A useful filter: does the song have a specific memory attached (a road trip, a first date, a inside joke in the lyrics), or did it just show up on a 'best first dance songs' list? Memory-attached songs age better — you'll still like the reason in twenty years, even if the song itself falls out of fashion.
Length matters more than couples expect. A full-length track can feel long under a spotlight with 150 people watching. Many couples have a DJ trim the song to 2:30–3 minutes, keeping the strongest verse and chorus, so the moment stays tight instead of stretching into something that feels like a performance obligation rather than a dance.
If the meaningful song truly isn't dance-floor-friendly, use it for a private first-look moment or the processional instead, and choose something with a clearer rhythm for the actual first dance. You don't have to force one song to do every job.
